Polyester Filament Yarn (PFY) is a type of synthetic yarn that is mainly made up of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET). It is used to produce consumer goods like bed sheets, curtains, wall coverings, and more. It is also used for making industrial products such as sewing threads, cords, insulation tapes, tents, and several other daily-use items.
PFY comes in many forms including monofilament and multifilament. In the case of multifilament, single polyester filaments are grouped together and then twisted or air-tangled to make them functional.
Textured Yarns are produced by twisting and drawing PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) multifilaments to develop stretch and bulk in the resulting product. These textured polyester filaments are typically lightweight, easy to wash, and durable. They offer a unique look and feel that adds to the value of the product they are used in.
Drawn Textured Yarn is produced when a Polyester POY is twisted and drawn simultaneously. This process results in a textured fabric that has a unique look and feels that can be found in garments, home decorations, seat covers, and more.
In the manufacturing process, a filament bundle of polyester is guided from a first pair of godets to a second pair of godets, where the speed between the two pairs of godets is set such that the bundle is drawn 1.3 to 3.5 times.
This crimping action can be either mechanical/thermal, or chemical/thermal alone. It is possible to produce a variety of different textured polyester filaments, ranging from very soft to very hard (Figure 2.3).
Texturing can be done at any of three points in the production process: prior to the spinning step, during the spinning, or after the weaving. This processing method can be applied to any wearable reinforcing fiber, as well as most spinnable polymer fibers.
During the process, an intermingling agent is added to the mixture of fibers, which can be a liquid such as water or a gas such as air or steam. This enables the polymer fibers to be evenly dispersed in the comb, allowing them to be drawn together into one strand of yarn.
These commingled yarns have exceptionally high strength and dimensional stability, making them an ideal material for the manufacture of reinforcing cords and other technical applications. They are able to withstand the effects of vibration, shock, and temperature extremes and have excellent crimp stability.
The tensile strength of a polyester fiber is usually more than that of a nylon fiber. This is because the initial modulus of a polyester filament is generally higher than that of a nylon fiber.
In terms of tensile strength, it is important to consider the size of the loops on each strand and how they are spread out during the spinning process. Using larger, more uniform loops on each strand allows the filaments to be more evenly distributed during the spinning process.
In addition, it is important to ensure that the strands are not too loose or too tight during the looming process. This will help prevent uneven dyeing and wool formation and will result in a more consistent finished product. It is best to consider the sizing of the strands before the actual looming process begins, in order to minimize waste. This will result in less dyeing and wool production, which will lower the cost of the woven product.
